The Town of Shelter Island is located geographically between the north and south forks of eastern Long Island in Suffolk County, New York. Shelter Island is approximately five miles by five miles in size and also encompasses surrounding bodies of water such as Shelter Island Sound, and Gardiners Bay.

 

 

The Shelter Island Town Police Department serves the community twenty four hours a day, seven days a week.  Our agency is one of the most unique police agencies in New York State; there is no bridge to the island and our ferry-only access limits immediate assistance from associated agencies. The Shelter Island Police Department takes great pride in preparation and preparedness. The Department has two major sections, patrol and investigative.  The patrol section handles all calls for service, preliminary investigations and maritime activities. The investigation section handles all investigative and criminal cases.

James J. Read, Chief

James J. Read, Chief of Police


Chief Read holds a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Education from SUNY Cortland and is currently working on his Master’s Degree in the Administration of Justice and Security from the University of Phoenix. In 2009 he completed a course of instruction at the FBI’s National Academy in Quantico, VA, as a member of the 236 class. He joined the Shelter Island Town Police Department in 1987 as a Police Officer. Chief Read was promoted to sergeant in 1996 and to Chief of Police in 1998. Under his leadership the police department has made numerous technological advancements including a digital records management system, which included adding computer terminals in patrol cars to document incident reports and access vital information. He led the department in an in-depth analysis of the rules, regulations, and operational practices that culminated in achieving New York State accreditation in 2009. Chief Read is also the Town's Emergency Management Coordinator.

Jack H. Thilberg, Detective/Sergeant

Detective Division


Detective Sergeant Thilberg joined the force in 1989 and was promoted to Detective in 1995 and Detective Sergeant in 1998. In addition to serving as the Executive Officer of the Department, D/Sergeant Thilberg is directly responsible for the Criminal Investigations, Juvenile Investigations, Warrants, Property/Evidence, and Special Operations components of the department.
 
Detective Sergeant Thilberg has received advanced training in various disciplines including, sex crimes identification and crime scene procedures, serious and fatal accident investigation, child abuse and neglect investigations, computer and electronic crime investigations, FBI interview & interrogation tactics, and DEA narcotic enforcement school. He serves as the department's training instructor, and dive team leader. D/Sgt. Thilberg is a certified master diver with numerous certifications including law enforcement underwater investigations. 

D/Sergeant Thilberg is a three-time recipient of the Southampton Kiwanis Club's Officer of the Year Award.

James D. Cronin, Sergeant

Patrol Division 

 
Sergeant James D. Cronin holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a minor in Mathematics from Southampton College as well as Master’s Degree in Business Administration from CW Post College of Long Island University. He joined the Shelter Island Town Police Department as a full time Police Officer in January of 1999. He was promoted to Sergeant in April of 2005. Sergeant Cronin was responsible for the NYS Police Accreditation Application process and in June of 2009 the Shelter Island Police Department became a New York State Accredited Agency. Sgt Cronin was named Southampton Kiwanis Club Officer of The Year in 2005 and 2009.
